おはようございます。 ラトナプーラの朝です。ラトナプーラでは朝からお昼ごろまで毎日 メインストリートで宝石商の人たちが宝石の売買、買い付けを しています。 道路いっぱいに人が群がるくらい、すごい人です。 宝石商の人は、皆、宝石をポケットにそのまま入れていたり、 ずた袋のようなものに大量に入れたりしていて、 「見たい」というと、そこから出してくるのです。なんともありがたみの ない入れ物・・・ Good morning. This is Ratnapura in the morning In Ratnapura, every day from the morning to around noon, on the main streets of the town, a lot of jewel dealers are trading. It looks like those streets are full of such people. It is very busy and crowded. Dealers put jewels in their pockets as they are, or in a shabby bag. When buyers ask them to show jewels, they pick them up from pockets or such a bag. Those shabby containers don’t look like many pricy jewels are in there. |

| さて、宝石を買うぞ！ということで、ママも宝石の買い付けに やってきました。 Mammy said, “OK, I will buy jewels,” and came to here to buy some. |

部屋に入り、待っていると、次から次へと宝石商の人が宝石を 持ってくるのです。部屋の外には宝石商の人が１０人くらい 列を作って待っています。 ママは座って、次々やってくる宝石商の人が見せてくれる宝石を ひとつひとつ見ながら、石を選びます。 １人の宝石商が２００個～３００個くらい持ってくるので、 この日だけでママが見た宝石の数１万個近く。 ここまで宝石を見ると、だいぶ宝石を見る目もできたようです。 She entered a room and waited, and then jewel dealers brought their jewels one after another. As one dealer brought 200 or 300 pieces, mammy saw nearly ten thousand jewels in just this day. The work of checking many jewels seemed to give her good eyes to estimate them. |

こちらは宝石を鑑定して、証明書を発行してくれる宝石公証役場。 街のど真ん中にあって、良い宝石が見つかったら、購入する前に 宝石を持っていって、「本物」と鑑定してもらってから、 宝石を購入する、なんてこともできるのです。 1万個近くの中から、ママがこの日選んだ宝石は２０個。 明日も宝石をいくつか見たあと、さらに絞って、購入する予定。 女の人ってすごい。 This is a notary public office appraising jewels and issuing a certification. It is in the center of the town. When we find a good jewel, we take it to that office and ask to appraise it. After that, we can buy it. Mammy selected 20 pieces of jewel out of nearly ten thousand pieces on this day.She was going to see more jewels, to select a few from among them, and to buy some. The tenacity of women is great. |
